Music & Lecture: Peruvian Charango
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us as we explore the Peruvian musical instrument, the charango, in a lecture and music performance by Alejandro Ataucusi.
Alejandro Ataucusi is a multi-instrumentalist, educator, composer, and band leader of Afro-Peruvian Jazz band Forbidden Tropics. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Alejandro was exposed to the ethnic music of his home country. In this event, Alejandro will be talking about the unique rhythms in Peruvian music with the charango, specific techniques on how to execute the charango that are part of the Peruvian charango sound, his experience of building a charango from scratch, and a comparison between the charango and hatun charango. He will perform some traditional pieces on the charango, original compositions, and solo arrangements on the hatun charango.
All are welcome. Registration is encouraged. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Metuchen Library.
