Library Cards


There is nothing more beneficial than having a library card. With a Metuchen Public Library Card individuals have access to many services at the library. These services include, but are not limited to: books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, interlibrary loan service, computer usage, online databases, ebooks, free streaming of digital contents, etc.

Upon registering for a Metuchen Public Library Card, you will be able to manage your account online via the Catalog. You will be able to:

  • Look for books
  • View your account and renew books
  • Pay overdue fines
  • Place holds on desired items
  • View best-seller book recommendation lists

Who can have a Metuchen Public Library Card?

Resident Card: Anyone who lives in and pays property taxes in the Borough of Metuchen is eligible to receive a Metuchen Public Library Card, free of charge, with full privileges to library materials, resources, and programs. The library card will be updated every three years. 

Senior Card: Metuchen Citizens ages 65 and over are eligible for a Senior Card.  Please bring a proof of identity. Senior Card has the following ground rules: 
  • Exempt from overdue fines on materials that are checked out ONLY at Metuchen Public Library
  • Card will be blocked when library account has reached 5 overdue items
  • Overdue fines will be charged when items are checked out at other LMXAC libraries
  • Card will be blocked when library account has reached $10.00 in overdue fines charged by other LMXAC libraries
  • Responsible for paying lost or damaged items

"Works-in-town" Card: Anyone who works in the Borough of Metuchen, but lives outside the Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium (LMXAC) is eligible to receive a Metuchen Public Library Card, free of charge. The library card will be updated on a yearly basis. Patrons with a reciprocal card have:

  • A limited borrowing privilege to Metuchen Public Library materials. 

  • Rights to participate in most library programs except programs that are limited to Metuchen residents.

  • Limited access to online databases and e-resources that are subscribed by LMXAC.

  • No access to online databases and e-resources that are subscribed solely by Metuchen Public Library.

  • No access to materials from other LMXAC libraries.

Paid Non-Resident Card: Anyone who lives outside the LMXAC, a non-resident Metuchen Public Library Card can be purchased for $75.00 per year. Patrons with a paid non-resident card have:

  • Full borrowing privilege to Metuchen Public Library materials.

  • Rights to participate in most library programs except programs that are limited to Metuchen residents.

  • Rights to be put on waiting list for programs that are limited to Metuchen residents.

  • Limited access to online databases and e-resources that are subscribed by LMXAC.

  • No access to online databases and e-resources that are subscribed solely by Metuchen Public Library. 

  • No access to materials from other LMXAC libraries.

What documentation must be provided to be issued a Metuchen Public Library Card?

All interested in obtaining a Metuchen Public Library Card must provide a valid form of government-issued photo identification and a proof of residency, proof of paying property taxes, or proof of employment in the borough of Metuchen. This may include a driver's license, passport, property lease, a recent utility bill, etc. A P.O. Box number is not a valid proof of residency within the Borough of Metuchen.

How long is a Metuchen Public Library card valid?

Upon activation, Metuchen Public Library Cards are valid for three (3) years. All patrons will be notified via phone or email to renew their library cards.

Can I use my Metuchen Library Card at another library?

Metuchen Public Library Cardholders are entitled to an "Open Borrowing" service. You are eligible to borrow materials in person from the participating public libraries of BCCLS, LMxAC, M.A.I.N. and PALS. Some libraries may have its own borrowing restrictions and requirements.

Can I use another library card at the Metuchen Public Library?

All members of libraries within the Libraries of the Middlesex Automation Consortium are welcome to use their library cards at the Metuchen Public Library.  The Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium is a non-profit membership organization which provides a full range of library automation services to its member libraries. Membership currently consists of 28 member libraries: 27 public libraries and one community college. One may use their Metuchen Public Library Card at these libraries as well. Please note that some restrictions and/or requirements may apply.

I lost my Metuchen Library Card, now what?

A replacement for a Metuchen Public Library card is $3.00 per card. An individual who has misplaced his/her card must visit the Metuchen Public Library with the appropriate documentation to be re-issued a new card. Upon receiving a new library card, the lost Metuchen Public Library Card will be inactivated and will not be able to be used.

What else do I need to know about having a Metuchen Public Library Card?

Individuals with a Metuchen Public Library Card are expected to be responsible and take care of it.  They are responsible for all items checked out on it and are encouraged not to let others use it. Lost library cards should be reported as soon as possible and individuals should notify the library of any name, address, telephone, or email changes as soon as possible.
