Metuchen Public Library

Homebound Service Policy

Metuchen Public Library offers Homebound Service. The purpose of the Homebound Service program is designed to provide library materials to Metuchen library cardholders who are temporarily or permanently unable to come to the library in person. Library materials can be delivered, and picked up for homebound patrons upon request.

  • “Homebound” is understood as being generally limited to one’s residence either temporarily due to illness or accident, or permanently due to disability, age, or other mobility issues.
  • Patrons must be Metuchen residents and have a valid library card in good standing. If the patron does not have a library card, proof of residence would be required and a library card can be assigned during the first homebound visit.
  • Patrons may apply for the Homebound Service program, by calling the Library at 732-632-8526, or emailing metuchenpubliclibrary@metuchenlibrary.org. Once a homebound patron profile is set up, a librarian will contact the patron to schedule a delivery in response to a request for library materials. The librarian will have the library materials ready based on the patron’s interest or specific selection.
  • The Librarian can provide in-person instruction on library digital resources upon request.
  • New and  popular or high-demand items such as bestseller books that have holds or hotspots will be limited in this service.
  • Homebound patrons accounts must be free of overdue fines and overdue items must be returned prior to the next request.
  • Homebound patrons are responsible for the cost of lost or damaged library materials.

Deliveries are coordinated between patrons’ requests and the available library staff or volunteers.
