Metuchen Public Library
Programming Policy
The Metuchen Public Library is dedicated to serving the community by providing free and open access to programs that promote lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and personal growth. Our programs are designed to foster literacy, enhance community connections, and address the diverse interests of Metuchen residents.
- Program Criteria: Programs offered by the library will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Programs will support our mission and service goals.
- Programs should address the needs and interests of the Metuchen community.
- High standards in content delivery and suitability for the intended audience.
- Presenters should have relevant expertise to programs they wish to present.
- Consideration of available space, budget, and staffing.
- Programs should complement other library services, events, and initiatives.
- Ensuring programs are accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities, and scheduled at convenient times for the public.
- Submission Process
- To propose a program, please submit your application through our Online Submission Form.
- All submissions must be completed online to be considered.
- For programs not sponsored by the library, please review our Meeting Room Reservations Policy for guidelines on reserving library space.
- Review and Response: Co-Sponsored Programs
- Inquiries will be reviewed and responded to within 60 days or less, depending on the volume of submissions.
- Priority is given to programs proposed by Metuchen residents and organizations.
- Co-Sponsored Programs
- The library may partner with other agencies, organizations, and businesses to co-sponsor programs that align with our mission and vision.
- Co-sponsored programs require active involvement of library staff in planning and content development.
- While we collaborate with external partners, library sponsorship does not imply endorsement of the partner’s policies or beliefs.
- Program Limitations
- All library programs must be free and open to the public.
- Programs must adhere to room capacity limits. The Community Room/Gallery accommodates 65 participants. Consider alternative venues for larger audiences and the Activity Room 15.
- Programs must not be commercial, politically partisan, or religious to avoid implied endorsements.
- Content should respect the library’s Code of Conduct and not disrupt library services.
- Sales of goods or services are prohibited except for authors, artists, and musicians selling copies of their works.
- Refreshments must be pre-approved, and alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
- Cancellations and Payments
- Presenters are not paid in advance. Payment is provided immediately after the program or mailed within 60 days.
- Presenters must notify the library at least one week in advance to cancel or reschedule a program.
- Cancellations without rescheduling will forfeit payment.
- Additional Considerations
- All programs must conclude at least 15 minutes before library closing time.
- The library may promote programs through posters, flyers, press releases, and social media.
- Presenters should provide necessary information and graphics promptly.
- The library reserves the right to modify promotional materials to meet library standards.
- The library may capture photographs, audio, and video recordings of programs for internal use and promotional purposes.
- Exceptions
- Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the Library Director and/or a majority vote of the Board of Trustees.
